Does it really matter where a great candidate comes from?

Glen Cathey, the Boolean Black Belt, recently wrote a rather provocative blog post entitled “Don’t be a sourcing snob.” He asks:

  • Is a candidate identified on LinkedIn intrinsically “better” than a candidate sourced from Monster?
  • Is candidate sourced by cold calling inherently “better” than a candidate sourced from a job posting on Careerbuilder?
  • Does it really matter where a great candidate comes from?

How To Tell If Your Sourcer Knows What S/He Is Doing

Posted by Maureen Sharib

In a recent MagicMethod seminar we were talking about shortcuts and the subject came up about how one can tell an experienced sourcer from a not-so-experienced sourcer. Speaking from a telephone names sourcing perspective, here are a couple down-and-dirty tricks one can ask to see if the person purporting to be a "telephone sourcer" really is!

“Tell me, what's the area code for Ft. Worth, TX? Albuquerque, NM? San Jose, CA? Waltham, MA?” You get the idea…

Walk the Grid

Posted by Maureen Sharib

A young recruiter from the UK ventured into a networking group (RBC) I belong to and asked where he could find technicians who work at BMW or Mercedes franchise dealers. He said the manager or the service receptionist names were easy to find, but he needed to find the guys working on the cars. I gave him some quick and easy advice:

“Call and ask for the breakroom or — is there a cafeteria? Ask for that. Many times there’s a black wall phone hanging over a grimy desk with lots of post-it notes and writing on the wall. If anyone is in there, they might answer! These sites usually have a car wash section too — they wash the cars for these high-end customers here in the states before returning them after service. Ask for the ‘car-wash person.’ When you get him or her on the phone, tell him you’re in the wrong place — you know that — can s/he tell you who one of the technicians is, so you might ask for him by name? Chances are he will tell you. And then when he tells you one, ask for another, and then another. Be gentle with him. Don’t scare him,” I add last, chuckling knowingly to myself.

And then I surprised myself when I told him, “Walk the grid in your mind — think about who works where and what they know — then go directly at them…”

“Walk the grid.” I suppose this is another way of saying, “Become one with your target and imagine yourself inside your target, walking around the place, looking here and snooping there, all the while minding your own very real business.”

First ever Midnight chat on RBC!

Best Night Line
John Kennedy "Yes, if you have movies with "live" soundtracks that would probably give me enough to pick up the stress patterns where you are manipulating your victims."

Denyse Diem Hello, I'm just entering the field of Sourcing and looking to learn all I can from you experienced Sourcers

John Kennedy Is that there are some true vampires of sourcing ... that can bring a voice mail directory to its knees at am.

RecruiterGuy It's always challenging to get past the gatekeeper.... but they were always a little more vulnerable right before a weekend or when trying to scoot out for a holiday weekend. Catching them in just the right moment is always helpful.

Maureen That's true John. I like the imagery!

Maureen That's also true RG - I LOVE to source around holidays - we have a good one coming up – Labor Day!

RecruiterGuy Ahhhh voicemail.... that brings back memories of learning call trees after hours and taking shots at spelling with the number pad for names and titles in voicemail. lol

MagicMethod Phone Sourcing (Rusing!) Classroom Chat Log 8/21/08

Best Remark of the Day
“…and, although it [sourcing] technically may be legal and, may, in its own Sharibian way be so massively contributing to the greater good of American commerce that there ought to be annual Sourcing Awards ceremonies...” ~ John S. Kennedy

Ruse Web definition - a deceptive maneuver (especially to avoid capture). Also spelled rouse and rouge as in, “I’m so ashamed by my lying that my cheeks turned rouge.” Word raises hackles for a lot of people. Some say it’s illegal to misrepresent yourself to gain any kind of information (this theory hangs on the unfair trade practices rulings), some say it’s not illegal but acceptable practice in love and war and recruiting tactics. Subject usually raises a firestorm of controversy resulting in name calling and mud slinging. The object of discussing rusing here is to point out that a good researcher does not have to ruse, it’s a choice each one makes on the front line of battle. A good researcher understands how to elicit information by ASKing the right questions in the right manner.
CONTROVERSIAL Rusing may be a right-of-passage, in so much that sourcers who began their careers “rusing”, that is, lying to get information, were made so uncomfortable in their psyches by it that they’re challenged to increase their skill sets to the point where it’s no longer necessary to ruse.

"To me rusing is a covert act. The ruser has to be purposfully misrepresenting themselves or their motives. They are lying to achieve something that could usually be gottten honestly if they did the work.” ~ Leo Mc Kiernan
