A Leadership Style is defined by how decisions are made.
Power-Mad Dictator
Makes all decisions. If she is a true tyrant, she often makes unrealistic demands, takes no feedback and disciplines those who do not follow orders severely.
The Benevolent Dictator uses a velvet fist making her authoritarian use of power more palatable with a pleasant demeanour, subtle forms of discipline and some openess to feedback. However, although, she might allow questions but doesn't make them a priority and might not take them seriously. (Authoritarian)
Expert Know-it-All
This leader sees himself as most qualified and, as a result, does not trust others to make decisions. He is far more task rather than people-oriented, is critical of differing opinions, rarely gives recognition, might be competitive, defensive, easily offended. But he is not as heavy handed or mean as the Dictator. (Authoritative)
Presidential
Leader makes final decisions after consulting others with special expertise. She recognizes others, delegates but keeps veto power. (Consultative)
Player Coach
Team members make decisions. Leader is coach/player. Focus on stimulating creativity creates culture of innovation. (Participative)
A good leader uses all styles.
